How the amount is worked out

A water change dilutes dissolved nitrate in direct proportion to the water you remove and replace with clean water. The percent change needed is one minus the target divided by the current level, times one hundred. Multiply that fraction by your volume and you get the gallons to remove. For example, cutting nitrate from 40 ppm to 20 ppm needs a 50 percent change, so on a 29 gallon tank you would swap about 14.5 gallons.

The tool caps its recommendation at 50 percent in a single session. Large changes can shift temperature, pH and hardness quickly, which stresses fish more than the nitrate you are removing. When the math asks for more than half, the calculator tells you to split the work across several changes over a few days and to retest between them.

Keeping nitrate down between changes

Nitrate is the end point of the nitrogen cycle and it climbs steadily from feeding and waste. Water changes are the reliable way to remove it, but you can slow the build up. Feed only what your fish finish, avoid overstocking, keep the filter clean so waste is exported rather than trapped, and grow live plants that use nitrate as fertilizer.

Always match the temperature of the new water to the tank and treat tap water for chlorine and chloramine before it goes in. Consistent smaller changes on a schedule keep levels stable, which fish tolerate far better than occasional large corrections.
